Remedies for a Sore Throat
Sore throat is a common clinical condition manifested by pain in the throat which increases during swallowing or talking and it is caused by inflammation.
In most cases, throat inflammation is caused by viral infection such as common cold . However, it may be caused by bacterial infection (strep throat). Fortunately, sore throat of viral origin is self limited and resolves on its own.
Symptoms of sore throat include:

- Difficulty in swallowing and talking –as it worsens the pain .

- Cough, runny nose & fever –symptoms of common cold
- Hoarse voice

General measures to relieve a sore throat
Get plenty of rest
Sleep well at night and try to sleep also during the day if possible. This is important because if you do not take a plenty of rest, your condition will not improve as your body is not able to deal with the infection.
Wash your hands frequently to limit the spread of infection. as known, our hands act as vector to the infection so one of the important general measures to control infection is adequate hand hygiene.
Drink plenty of water
Keeping yourself hydrated is of great value as it plays a role in:
- Thinning secretions in the throat
- Effective immune response as keeping your body hydrated will help fight off infections
So it is not recommended for you to have many cups of coffee daily when you have a sore throat as coffee acts as a diuretic and will make your body dehydrated.
Take a vitamin C
Vitamin c act as an antioxidant so it plays an important role in protection of your body cells from damage.

- Use over the counter throat lozenges for relief
There are many non-prescription herbal lozenges which are safe, effective and contain local anaesthetics which can soothe your pain.
2. Use throat sprays
Also play effective role in relief of the pain by numbing the lining of your throat. It is not recommended to use those local anaesthetic components for more than 3 day because it may mask a serious bacterial infection such as streptococcus infections.
3. Gargle With Warm Salt Water
Some believe that gargling with salt water is an old wives tale. However in fact, it’s about one of the closest to cures for a sore throat you can get.
This because salt can draw water out the swollen cells of your throat, so the cells in will shrink in size which in turn will help soothe the pain which is mainly caused by friction between the swollen cells of your inflamed throat.
- Suck on Garlic
As garlic contain the allicin compound which an effective role in killing the bacteria which cause your sore throat and fighting the germs that cause pain and irritation.
Drinking warm water with cayenne is considered also one of the effective natural remedies. This is because Cayenne (and other hot peppers) have a chemical compound called Capsaicin that temporarily soothes pain . As it can hinder something called substance P, which is what transmits pain signals to your brain.
